I am what is called a “trailing spouse”.  Not a very impressive title for a fifty-something, college and grad school-educated, intelligent (most of the time) woman of the world.  But, it’s a great life and I am forever grateful for it!  My husband and I are American expats living in Luanda, but we hail from Houston, Texas.  This is our second expat assignment, with London being our first.  Folks, this is different.  Very different.  London was expat-light.  This is the real deal.  Hope you enjoy reading about our African odyssey.  Luanda may not be glamorous, or even remotely sane, but it is interesting!

    I truly enjoy reading your blog. My husband and I are (more than likely) moving to Luanda from (currently)Denver, CO (previous Houston) by the end of the year. I have so many questions, concerns, and fears. We’ve never been expats before, so we are getting the baptism by fire I would guess. We will be living in the city centre. We are both in our mid 40s, have 2 grown children who will not be moving with us, and married 27 years. While we have travelled the globe extensively and have a vacation home in Sweden, moving to Angola will be our biggest adventure yet. If you could offer any advice or tips I would greatly appreciate it. We will have a driver and would love to explore the region, and realize that is not encouraged. Your time there seems so exciting and I look forward to having my own adventures.

This isn’t my first TS experience, in fact, I’ve not only been an accompanying partner before, as well as an expat in many different places, I’ve even written a book about it! It is Africa, still, so I am sure you will run into some interesting situations.     Thank you for your blog, very inspiring for me. I am a geologist like you, and I am ging to be a “trailing spouse” soon, as my husband will be reallocate in Luanda in some months. We are from Italy and wehave a little kid with us. Our parents think we are mad, but I think the better periodo for going around in the world is when children are small or when they are grewn up 😉
    I’m reading all about Luanda in your blog! How is the safety there? Is it possible to walk around during the day in the city center or b the sea or is it better to always move by car?
    I will be pleased if I can write you for some questions…!
